New Delhi: The One Laptop per Child project supported by Miami-based One Laptop per Child Association (OLPCA) has rolled out a prototype of a modular laptop for children that stays with them throughout their childhood.

OLPC's Australian partner One Education has introduced Xo Infinity prototype under this project that can be upgraded and modified as per requirement. It is based on the idea of providing children with a single laptop that can survive their school years.

The core computer will be a small, durable machine with support for a range of hardware including touchscreens and keyboards, ARM or x86 chips, and operating systems including Linux, Android, and Windows.

Xo Infinity has been designed in a manner that even a 4-year-old can construct and use. It can be turned into a tablet or a laptop with keyboard. The battery or the wireless module are also easily changeable.

The laptop will provide access to online communities of practice, apps that aid all styles of learning and activities that encourage and reward student engagement. It also drives out the need of investing in multiple devices as the child grows. The modularity allows users to trade, swap and donate parts to suit their needs.

However, the laptop isn't hitting the market anytime soon.One Education is working on the prototype and will go for crowdfunding launch later this year, which means we can see a possible rollout in 2016.</p>
