<p> <i> 12.23 pm </i> The College of Engineering Pune wins national all-terrain vehicle contest
PUNE: The College of Engineering Pune (COEP) won the eighth edition of the all-India all-terrain vehicle endurance competition — Baja SAEINDIA 2015, while the team from DY Patil College of Engineering secured the second position.


Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Vellore, was the second runner-up.

At 160kg, COEP's vehicle was adjudged the lightest. The COEP team also won the endurance award which assessed the vehicle's ability to operate at a speed over rough terrain, followed by VIT, Vellore. The KL University, Guntur, team was declared the first 'Best eBaja Team'. This was the first year of the e-Baja, an electric all-terrain vehicle endurance competition, in which 12 colleges participated.

This year's event saw the participation of 323 teams, out of which 122 qualified for the final round and 74 for the endurance round. The theme was 'Beyond Boundaries' and included a new track with hurdles across 4.5km. All competitions were held at the National Automotive Testing and R&D Infrastructure Project (NATRiP) facility at Pithampura near Indore.

"This forum gives young engineering talent an opportunity to showcase their skills, innovate and acquire real life experience posed with challenges, which is critical to success in the long run," Pawan Goenka, executive director, Mahindra & Mahindra, the title partner for the event, said in a statement.

"BAJA is an initiative of the Society of Automotive Engineers India (SAEINDIA) that provides an opportunity for students to get hands-on learning experience in vehicle design," said Aravind Bharadwaj, president, SAEINDIA.

"We also assess abilities of the participants by testing them on parameters such as leadership skills and theoretic and practical knowledge," said Subodh Morye, convener. "Indore has shown the highest participation, closely following cities like Pune and Chennai," he added.

Other awards included the engineering design award, which went to Rustamji Institute of Technology Gwalior and the go-green emissions award which went to SRM University, Chennai. The Dronacharya special award was given to the team from Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology Sangrur, Punjab, and Venus International college of Technology, Gandhinagar.</p>
