 Lollipop update begins today

Sony has officially confirmed that the Android 5.0 Lollipop update will begin rolling out to Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact handsets beginning today.

It’s been a long wait, but Xperia users will finally be able to get their hands on Google’s latest OS.

“We’re starting out Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade from today for Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact,” said a Sony spokesperson.

You’ll see the upgrade hit first devices in the Nordics and Baltics, continuing to further markets, for more Xperia Z Series products, starting In around two weeks’ time.”

The full list of Xperia Z devices due to get the update in two weeks’ time is available on Sony’s website.

The update will bring plenty of improvements to the platform, not least improved battery life courtesy of OS optimisations.

You’ll also get lock-screen notifications, and a complete design overhaul based on Google’s ‘material design’ aesthetic.

There will also be multi-user user profiles and guest mode, which means it will be easier to give your friends and family a chance to play with your smartphone.

One of the most important changes from Sony is the opening-up of the SD card. You’ll now be able to move any apps – including third-party ones – across to the SD card.

If you don’t get the update immediately, don’t worry – timing and availability very much depends on your market and carrier.

Fortunately, at least we now know the update is on its way to Xperia handsets, assuaging the concerns of Xperia users who have waited patiently for Lollipop since we first saw the software back in September.</p>
